We spoke with four people living at Emmaus House and three relatives. Comments included "The staff are very good. They support X as they need to be supported", "The staff are kind; they look after me well" and "The staff check on me regularly."

People were protected from the risks of inadequate nutrition and dehydration. We looked at people's care records and saw arrangements were in place to identify those people at a greater risk of poor nutrition and dehydration. Records showed people received regular drinks and meals.

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. Staff had received training in safeguarding. When asked, staff showed a clear understanding of the different types of abuse and who they would report concerns to.

Staff received appropriate professional development.

The provider had systems in place to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service people received. Checks were carried out by the manager and staff within the home. Records showed audits were carried out in a wide range of areas including incidents and accidents, food, medication, the environment, infection control and mattresses.

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the home acted in accordance to their wishes. Where people did not have the capacity to consent to treatment then the home acted in accordance with legal requirements.

We saw that the relevant health care professionals were contacted as people's needs changed. This helped to ensure that people's health and wellbeing was being looked after.

Appropriate arrangements were in place in relation to obtaining, recording, administering and returning medicines. We saw that all the people had received their medication at the required times. This helped to ensure that people's medication was managed correctly.

We reviewed two staff files and viewed the recruitment procedures. All the files contained the relevant pre-employment checks which included application form, interview assessment form, references, enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. This meant that the provider was assured that staff were not barred from working with adults or children.

People's complaints were fully investigated and resolved. We saw evidence that the home had a system in place for tracking complaints received. The home had not received any complaints for a considerable amount of time. We examined two records that showed the complaint had been fully considered, appropriately responded to and resolved with all the relevant people.
