We looked for evidence that service leadership, management and governance assured high-quality, person-centred care; supported learning and innovation; and promoted an open, fair culture.

Shared direction and culture

The service had a shared vision, strategy and culture.

All staff had contributed to the development of the service’s vision and strategy, which was kept under review.

Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders

The service had inclusive leaders who understood the context in which they delivered care, treatment and support and embodied the culture and values of their organisation. Leaders had the skills, knowledge, experience and credibility to lead effectively. They did so with integrity, openness and honesty.

Freedom to speak up

The service fostered a positive culture where people felt they could speak up and their voice would be heard.

The service had a whistleblowing policy which clearly laid out the process of raising concerns internally and externally.

Workforce equality, diversity and inclusion

The service valued diversity in their workforce. They had an inclusive and fair culture which promoted equality and equity.

The service had policies and procedures to promote diversity and equality. Staff were up to date with their equality and diversity training.

Governance, management and sustainability

The service had clear responsibilities, roles, systems of accountability and good governance. They used these to manage and deliver good quality, sustainable care, treatment and support. They acted on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes, and shared this securely with others when appropriate.

The service had established governance processes that were appropriate for their service. All required policies and procedures were available. Staff took patient confidentiality and information security seriously.

However, the service did not have an established process of formal supervision, or to ensure they had oversight of health and safety risks in the healthcare environment. Following the assessment, the service told us they took actions to address these areas.

Partnerships and communities

The service understood their duty to collaborate and work in partnership, so services work seamlessly for people.

In addition to private microsuction service, the service was also available for NHS patients referred by their local primary care network.

The service took part in a local open day held at the GP service, from which they operated, to educate the local population on the procedure and what they offered.

Learning, improvement and innovation

The service focused on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation. They encouraged creative ways of delivering equality of experience, outcome and quality of life for people. They actively contributed to safe, effective practice.

The service had a quality improvement plan to help drive improvements in services. Staff demonstrated continuous learning by keeping up to date with latest guidelines related to their practice.
