Our current view of the service

Updated 14 July 2025

We carried out this announced, off-site inspection on 21 August 2025.

Where we carry out an off-site assessment, we undertake a detailed review of the practice risk assessments, policies, staff records and other relevant documents. We gather feedback from patients, staff and stakeholders (where relevant). We carry out a remote visual assessment of the premises and have discussions with staff.

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.

Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

Clifton Orthodontics is part of Portman Dentex, a dental group provider. The practice is in Bristol and provides NHS and private orthodontic dental care and treatment for adults and children.

On-street parking was available in the local area. While a portable ramp was available, access to the practice was via steep stairs and patients requiring accessible facilities were directed to a nearby sister practice.

The practice had 3 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 11 staff, of which there were 3 specialist orthodontists, 3 dental nurses, a trainee orthodontic therapist, 2 receptionists, a treatment coordinator and the practice manager. We gathered feedback from staff, ahead of the inspection and spoke to a range of staff on the day, including 1 specialist orthodontist, 1 dental nurse, the trainee orthodontic therapist and the practice manager. One of the group’s Safety and Quality Specialists was at the inspection supporting the practice.

People's experience of the service

Updated 14 July 2025

Two weeks before our inspection, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We did not receive any direct patient feedback.
The practice gathered patient feedback from another 47 patients ahead of our inspection. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.
Patients scored the standards of cleanliness positively.
Patients on the whole felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs.

Patients told us they were given clear information to help them make an informed choice about their treatment and any associated costs. They were involved in decisions about their care.

The practice shared patient feedback with the team. We were told this was reviewed and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken.
