Caring

Good

4 June 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 70 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Feedback from relatives and people was very positive about the staff and the service. For example a relative told us, “The ones (staff) I have met are very attentive and they sit on the sofa with mum, chatting to her, so they are interacting with her. They are very good.” Another said, “They (staff) are very supportive, they are kind, they are there and help her in all the ways she needs support and help.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Some people’s needs were highly specialist and required staff to provide driving support or to accompany people out when travelling. The service and their staff provided this support positively and flexibly.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

One person who had capacity had chosen to have a risk alarm sensor mat by their bed at night. This informed staff if they got up from bed during the night so staff could immediately assist them. This improved the person’s independence and ability to remain at home. The presence of this mat was risk assessed by the service.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

A relative told us about staff ability to deal with issues themselves when they arose, rather than having to seek support from elsewhere. They said, “They treat him with respect, and they are reliable, and that’s a great relief. When there have been a couple of issues, they don’t get on the phone immediately, they sort it for him.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 2

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff. They always supported and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care. However, where staff were delivering complex care which caused emotional demand on staff, they could have been given more individual support.

Although staff were positive about the support they received from the service, the service was not always providing staff with the best guidance and support to help them care for people who had very complex needs. Staff had individual structured supervision once every 3 months in line with the service’s policy. However, service leaders agreed staff would benefit from more frequent individual supervision and support, particularly where staff experienced potential isolation of delivering individual support over consecutive days.

The service promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they felt supported in their role. A staff member told us, “I have just started working with DCI care some months ago, but l can gladly say l made a correct decision coming to work for them. The management is very supportive. They respond to calls and messages immediately and if need be, they come and support in client houses.”
