Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were in control of their care, support and how they lived their lives. Staff encouraged people to be as independent as possible whilst remaining safe. One person told us, “The staff do help me to be as independent as I can be. They are encouraging but don’t do everything for me.”

The provider was in the process of increasing the team of well-being co-ordinators from 2 to 3 at the time of this assessment, with the aim to have activities cover in the home 7 days a week. People were supported to spend time with their families and enjoyed activities both in their home and in the local community. One person told us, “I have done some baking this morning. I am happy that there is enough for me to join in with. We are going to Blackpool next week to see the donkeys.” Another person was keen to tell us about a recent animal visit and said, “The things we can do varies. There are activities and I join in with the group stuff. They brought five dogs in recently which was great.” People were able to access local shops, either with support or independently, when assessed as safe to do so.

The home had an extensive garden area to the rear with rural views. The outdoor space had been designed to keep people safe, was enclosed and flat. There were paths with a variety of seating areas, and we saw this area being used by people during our inspection. The home had plans in place to further develop the usage of the garden for the summer months to encourage more people to access the outdoors. There were plans to change a small building in the centre of the garden into a café bar and to use this to help develop community links. A Blackpool-style summer party was also in the planning, as requested by people living in the home.

A health professional we spoke with told us activities were going on ‘all the time’; karaoke being a favourite with people. They told us staff used distraction techniques to good effect, playing ball games with people to help calm them and provide a focus. Staff regularly asked people for suggestions of new activities they could offer in the home.
