Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People’s choice and independence was promoted, and this was reflected in people’s care records and confirmed through our conversations with staff. Staff spoke warmly about people and told us about examples where they promoted their independence and encouraged them to make choices. Staff demonstrated a kind and compassionate approach. Comments included, “I take care of clients in the same way I would my grandma or my mother. I treat people in the same way as I would want to be treated if I needed care, and I like it when they are smiling when I leave.”

People and relatives gave positive feedback about the caring and supportive nature of staff. Comments included, “They [staff] respect my independence and encourage me to do what I can for myself, but they are there if I need anything” and “They are very, very caring and all of them [staff] are extremely nice people.”

People and relatives were involved in writing and reviewing their care plans.
