Why we inspected

This inspection was prompted by a review of the information we held about this service.

We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the Safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to COVID-19 and other infection outbreaks effectively.

Follow up

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Thornbury Villa is a residential care home for up to 14 older people. During this inspection, 14 people were living at the service.

The home changed ownership on the 01 February 2020, and this was their first inspection.

We found the following examples of good practice:

People were being looked after by staff who understood the important of keeping people safe from Covid 19. The provider’s policies and training programme supported this.

There was a good stock of PPE which was worn and disposed of appropriately. People and staff were tested in line with government guidance. Staff who had been on leave were required to prove a negative test result before coming back into the building. All staff and people had been vaccinated.

All visitors, including family, professionals and contractors, had to evidence being Covid free before entering the building. Lateral flow tests (the test that takes 30 minutes to give a result) were completed, temperatures were taken and, they were asked for any signs and symptoms. PPE was provided to ensure they could complete their visit safely.

Thornbury Villa is a small premises and thought had been given to ensure people could socially distance and receive visits in line with current guidance. People chose who they wanted as their nominated visitors. Individual visiting risk assessment were completed with each person and, visiting arranged in people’s own rooms, the conservatory and/or garden.

The provider has employed an activity coordinator to ensure there was a member of staff available to be with people to keep them occupied.

There was enhanced cleaning to ensure that the home was clean and extra measures put in place after visiting took place.
