Community mental health survey 2017

Read the results of our latest survey which looked at the experiences of people receiving community mental health services.

Eligibility and participation

  • Participants: 12,139
  • Response rate: 26 per cent
  • Age range: 18 years and older
  • Time period: September to November 2016
  • Eligibility: People who received care or treatment for a mental health condition.
  • Exclusions: People who were only seen once for an assessment, current inpatients, and anyone primarily receiving treatment in specific areas such as drug and alcohol abuse, learning disability services and specialist forensic services.

Key Findings for England

Around two-thirds of respondents reported a positive experience of overall care. In addition, the vast majority of respondents said that they knew how to contact the person in charge of their care if they had concerns. Higher proportion of respondents this year also knew who to contact out of hours if they were experiencing a crisis.

However, substantial concerns remain about the quality of care some people experience when using community mental health services. There has been little notable improvement in survey results in the last year in the majority of areas.

The survey results suggest scope for further improvements in a number of areas including: crisis care, access and coordination of care, involvement in care, monitoring the effects of medication and receiving additional support.

This report identifies those trusts whose patients experience care is better, or worse than expected when we compare the survey results across trusts.

Results for NHS trusts

These results show how trusts performed on individual questions in the survey. The technique used to analyse these results allows us to identify which trusts performed 'better', 'worse' or 'about the same' when compared with other trusts.

Please note that due to redevelopment work, the results from the 2017 survey are only comparable with results from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 surveys.

How will the results be used?

CQC will use the results from the survey in the regulation, monitoring and inspection of NHS trusts in England. Survey data will be used in CQC’s Insight, an intelligence tool which indicates potential changes in quality of care to support decision making about our regulatory response. Survey data will also form a key source of evidence to support the judgements and inspection ratings published for trusts.

Trusts, and commissioners, are expected to take action to improve services based on the results.

NHS England and the Department of Health

Information collected nationally in a consistent way is essential to support public and Parliamentary accountability. The results are used by NHS England and the Department of Health for performance assessment, improvement and regulatory purposes.

NHS Improvement

The NHS Trust Development Authority is now part of NHS Improvement, which will use the results to inform quality and governance activities as part of its Oversight Model for NHS trusts.
