Our view of the service
Date of on-site assessment, 12 November 2025.
The Hollies is a 10 bedded specialist ward providing care and treatment for adults with a learning disability and/or autism and additional mental health needs. The service admitted adults who had been identified as having additional complex needs and were at immediate risk to themselves or others. The ward was split into 2 areas called Hollies 1 and Hollies 2. Hollies 1 had 6 bedrooms and was mixed sex. There was 1 patient admitted on the ward. Hollies 2 had closed and there were no plans to re-open. Therefore, the Hollies 1 had capacity for 6 people.
The Hollies was located at the Cavell Centre in the Peterborough hospital site.
The service was provided by Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust to carry out the following regulated activities:
Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 Diagnostic and screening procedures
Treatment of disease, disorder or injury
We carried out this unannounced assessment on 12 November 2025 due to the service having an aged rating. At this assessment we assessed 1 assessment service group; Wards for people with learning disabilities or autism where we assessed all quality statements across Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led key questions.
During this assessment we spoke with staff including hospital managers, nurses and healthcare assistants. We inspected the ward environment and clinic room at the hospital. We observed staff and patient interactions on these wards. We reviewed patient care records, patient prescription charts and reviewed minutes of various meetings, policies and procedures, data and documents relevant to the running of the service. The last inspection of the service took place in June 2018. At that inspection, the provider received an overall rating of good. We found 1 breach of Regulation 15, Premises and equipment regarding cleanliness of the environment. We did not inspect Effective, Caring and Responsive the rating for these remained the same as the previous inspection in January 2020. All 3 of these key questions were rated as Good.
At this assessment the rating remains Good.
People's experience of this service
During this inspection we spoke with 1 person and 2 carers. Feedback was positive, and the person we spoke with could name all staff and said they were kind and respectful. They felt safe on the ward and were supported to understand risks and how to keep safe. The person we spoke with said they were given information about their care and treatment and felt involved in making decisions, although they would like more choices in relation to food.
The carers we spoke with said staff were helpful, supportive, and involved them in their relatives care and treatment. The carers we spoke with said they felt the whole package of care was individualised to their relative’s needs. They had a copy of the care plan and were very involved in the reviews of this.
Throughout the inspection we saw positive interactions between staff and people. We saw staff communicate in a way that was suitable for the persons communication needs.
