Listening to and involving people
Arnold Lodge placed a strong emphasis on patient involvement. A dedicated Patient Involvement Support Worker collaborated with patients to develop innovative approaches to engagement. We observed several examples of meaningful involvement, including patients contributing to staff inductions and training. Leaders spoke proudly of patients who had presented at national conferences, including 1 hosted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Patients had also developed presentations on restrictive practices and care planning meetings.
Co-production was a central element of care at Arnold Lodge. We observed a ‘ward away day’ where patients, ward staff, and members of the multi-disciplinary team collaboratively designed a new treatment pathway. Patients actively participated, sharing opinions, asking questions, and challenging ideas. Their contributions were respected and valued.
At Wathwood Hospital, we attended a well-established patient forum chaired by patients and attended by leaders and multi-disciplinary staff, including representatives from occupational therapy, social work, and advocacy. Patients were able to challenge leaders openly and without fear of retribution. Their voices were respected, and their input was taken seriously. Meeting minutes were recorded, and actions from previous meetings were reviewed. Each ward had a designated patient spokesperson who provided feedback to their respective wards.
