Our view of the service
The Becton Centre is a specialist child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) based in Sheffield and is part of Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. There are 3 lodges located at the Becton Centre, all of which provide care on a local and national basis. We inspected this service over 3 days, 26, 27 November and 4 December 2024.
During this assessment, we identified 4 breaches of the Health and Social Care Act pilot 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014; 2 breaches of Regulation 12- Safe Care and Treatment, 2 breaches of Regulation 17- Good Governance.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with 2 young people and 12 carers who told us they or their relatives felt safe using the service; that staff were friendly, kind, supportive, and overall, a good level of care was provided. Carers stated that the psychiatrist, psychologist and social worker provision was very good, thorough and helpful.
Carers that we spoke with said that they felt well informed, receiving regular/daily updates on their relative’s care and felt involved in the care and treatment that their relative received. Carers also felt that the care their relatives received was individualised to their needs, commenting on the good standard of activities and therapies available such as art therapy, gym and pool access as well as visits off site to a local farm.
Carers said that staff worked well as a team to ensure their relatives received the care and support they needed. However, 3 carers said that there was poor communication between lodges and services, with a lack of updates regarding their relative’s care.
Another carer reported that their relative did not share issues as the staff did not act on them.
