Our view of the service

Trust Rating for well-led Inadequate:

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation trust was formed on 1 April 2020 following the merger of Basildon and Thurrock, Mid Essex and Southend NHS trusts. They are the only acute provider of care within the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System. They cover a diverse population with areas of significant deprivation.

The trust has three main hospital sites, Southend, Broomfield and Basildon Hospitals. The trust hosts specialist centres for Cardiothoracic at Basildon Hospital, St Andrews Centre for plastic surgery and burns at Broomfield Hospital and was currently developing the Essex Cancer Centre at Southend Hospital. The trust was currently building new diagnostic centres with one due to open in the summer of 2025.

The trust had a £1.5 billion turnover with 16,871 staff providing services to a population of 1.2 million people. Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust manages one of the largest NHS estates in the country, covering approximately 397,000 square metres across multiple hospital sites including. The estate supports over 1,700 inpatient beds and 64 theatres, serving a population of around 1.2 million people.

Every day the trust sees more than 1000 people in the three emergency departments and carries out more than 160 operations and sees 4,300 patients in their outpatient departments. Every year the trust manages 167000 emergency inpatient admissions, 158,000 day case and planned inpatient admissions and 60,000 operations.

• The trust must ensure they assess, monitor and improve the quality and safety of the services provided

• The trust must ensure they assess, monitor and mitigate the risks relating to the health, safety and welfare of service users

• The trust must ensure they maintain securely an accurate, complete and contemporaneous record in respect of each service user, including a record of the care and treatment provided to the service user and of decisions taken in relation to the care and treatment provided.

• The trust must ensure they seek and act on feedback from patients and staff on the services provided in the carrying on of the regulated activity, for the purposes of continually evaluating and improving such services.
