Caring
We rated caring as outstanding. We assessed a limited number of quality statements in the caring key question and found areas of concern. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating for the last inspection, which was outstanding. We assessed one quality statement around kindness, compassion and dignity. People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. Their privacy and dignity were respected. People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. Their privacy and dignity were respected.

Kindness, compassion and dignity
We spoke to five parents and carers who were staying on Bluefin ward during our assessment. They told us they felt supported and well informed by kind staff, however some parents spoke to us about feeling “judged” by some staff members and described that they were made to feel as though they were responsible for their child’s injuries. We reviewed NHS friends and family test (FFT) data from the emergency department. The FFT is a feedback tool asking patients a series of questions about whether they would recommend the hospital to friends and family members. It is not possible to separate out FFT data between adult ED admissions and paediatric ED admissions and therefore the following data may not be fully reflective of the paediatric ED. Between September 2023 and April 2024, the percentage of positive responses ranged between 77% and 83% which was generally in line with or better than the national average. There was a limited amount of feedback on website review pages, however the three that we saw within the assessment report timeframes were positive about the paediatric ED staff and described the staff on Bluefin as “fantastic” and “so supportive”. Due to the size of the inpatient FFT test, it is not possible to use this data to accurately reflect patient’s views on Bluefin ward.
All of the staff we spoke with were passionate about treating patients with the best care in difficult circumstances.
We did not collect the evidence to score this evidence category.
Staff worked hard to protect the privacy and dignity of their patients. We observed kind and caring interactions between staff and patients. However, we did observe during the assessment one patient being reviewed by a doctor in a communal area with the door closed but with a window pane which did not adequately protect their dignity.
