Our view of the service

We carried out an unannounced inspection of urgent and emergency care (UEC) at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on 13, 14 and 15 January 2026. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is part of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary provides a range of services including Urgent and Emergency Care, Medical care and Outpatients. This inspection looked at UEC services in response to concerns raised to us around safe care and treatment and in preparation for a trust level well led inspection. The inspection focused on quality statements under the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led Key Questions. Following the inspection the UEC service has an overall rating of requires improvement. The rating from UEC has been combined with ratings of the other services from the last inspections to give an overall rating for Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. See our previous reports to get a full picture of all other services at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The overall rating remains good. We found breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, dignity and respect and staffing.
