Our view of the service

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is one of the largest and busiest NHS trusts in England, providing hospital and community services for approximately 1.1 million people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The Trust operates three main hospital sites: Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital, alongside several community-based locations. LRI also functions as a designated Trauma Unit, supporting the regional trauma network. UHL treats more than one million patients each year and provides a wide range of specialist services, including cardiac, renal, cancer and respiratory care. It also has a major teaching and research role, working in partnership with local universities and hosting nationally recognised research programs and specialist centers. The Trust serves a diverse population with a broad mix of ages, cultures and health needs. Its services are delivered across large acute sites and community settings to ensure healthcare access across both city and county areas. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust heart centre at the Glenfield hospital continues to lead the way in developing new and innovative research and techniques, such as surgery with a Robotic Arm, TAVI (Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Insertion) and the use of the suture less valve in heart surgery. It has also become one of the world’s busiest ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation) centres and the only hospital in the United Kingdom to provide ECMO therapy for both adults and children.
