Our view of the service
We conducted this assessment following information of concern around care of medical patients when moving from the Emergency department onto wards. We inspected 12 quality statements across the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions and have combined the scores for these areas with scores from the last inspection to give the rating. There was a good safety culture where incidents were investigated, and learning was embedded to promote good practice. Staff provided safe care and treatment, and the environment appeared safe and well maintained. When the department was busy, leaders increased staffing levels to meet the needs of their patients. People could now mostly access care and treatment when they needed it. The department and staff were well-led by leaders who embodied the cultures and values of their organisation. There was improved governance and risk management, and a positive environment for shared learning.
People's experience of this service
Patients and family or carers with them were mostly positive about the staff, they told us they were treated with kindness and provided effective care and treatment. Records mostly showed they were given the tests they needed promptly, and they felt staff were on hand if they needed them for help or support. However, some patients raised concerns about the length of time taken to be admitted into a bed.
