Our view of the service
Medway Maritime Hospital provides a range of NHS hospital services. This assessment looked at urgent and emergency services to follow up on a Warning Notice issued in April 2024, when we rated urgent and emergency services requires improvement.
The rating for urgent and emergency services has been combined with the ratings of the other services from the last assessments. See our previous reports to get a full picture of all other services at Medway Maritime Hospital.
The rating of Medway Maritime Hospital remains requires improvement.
We found that the service did not always provide safe care and treatment and that patients were not always treated with dignity and respect. The emergency department faced challenges in managing patient flow to the wider hospital. As a result, some patients received unsafe care due to ineffective escalation procedures that failed to protect their privacy and dignity.
The service was previously in breach of the legal regulations in relation to dignity and respect and safe care and treatment. Improvements were found at this assessment, but the service remained in breach of these regulations.
