Our view of the service

Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 October 2021 when Salford Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust legally acquired Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The trust operates a range of acute, community health and social care services which are provided by the trust's four care organisations; Salford, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury.

The trust has over 20,000 staff and has four acute hospitals – Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary which provide a full range of acute services, including acute medicine, urgent and emergency care, acute frailty units, rehabilitation services, dental services and surgical services, to a population of approximately 1 million people within hospital settings and the community.

This assessment looked at medical care (including older people’s care) at Royal Oldham Hospital. We conducted this unannounced focused assessment between 8 and 10 July 2025 to follow up on the previous "requires improvement" rating and Section 29A warning notice issued in October 2024. We reviewed 21 quality statements across the safe, effective, responsive and well-led key questions. We did not review the caring key question during this assessment. The rating for caring is based on the previous rating for this key question.

We cannot rate the overall location at Royal Oldham Hospital as we have not assessed all the assessment service groups operated by Northern Care Alliance at this hospital.
