People should be safe from harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (outcome 11)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (medical and non-medical equipment, furnishings or fittings).
  • Benefit from equipment that is comfortable and meets their needs.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 08/03/2011, checked the provider's records, observed how people were being cared for, reviewed information from people who use the service, talked to staff and talked to people who use services.

Our judgement

The Cassel Hospital has suitable arrangements in place to protect patients who use its services from risks associated with the unsafe use of equipment.

User experience

On this occasion we did not speak with patients about this outcome area.

Other evidence

The hospital has limited patient oriented equipment available. However portable appliance testing and electrical safety checks form part of the planned preventative maintenance programme. Furniture was generally in good repair and television rooms were furnished with sofas and comfortable chairs for patient use.

Staff told us that patient’s own electrical items brought into hospital were tested before they could be used in the building.
