Our view of the service
University Hospital provides a range of NHS hospital services. This inspection looked at the gynaecology service. We inspected gynaecology services as a standalone assessment service group (ASG) due to some concerns identified from a previous surgical inspection completed in September 2024 and March 2025. We rated gynaecology as good. The rating of gynaecology has been combined with the ratings of the other services from the previous inspections. See our previous reports to get a full picture of all the other services at University Hospital. The rating of University Hospital remains good. In our inspection of gynaecology services, we found:
The service had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly. People were protected and kept safe. Staff understood and managed risks. The facilities and equipment met the needs of people, were clean and well-maintained and any risks were mitigated. There were mostly enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. However, not all staff had received the required training. Staff managed medicines well and involved people in planning any changes.
Staff delivered care based on latest evidence and good practice. People always had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff monitored people’s outcomes and made improvements where required. Staff worked well together to ensure people received effective care. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.
Staff treated people with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, took account of their individual needs, and helped them understand their conditions. Staff mostly responded to people in a timely way. The service supported staff wellbeing.
The service provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the service took it seriously and acted on it. People could access the service for any gynaecology emergencies, and they received fair and equal care.
Leaders were inclusive, capable, visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities.
We identified 1 breach of regulation during our inspection of gynaecology services which was in relation to training for staff (Regulation 18 (2) (a) ).
