Our view of the service

We carried out an announced assessment of Scunthorpe General Hospital on 20 and 21 January 2026. We carried out this assessment in line with our assessment priorities. We assessed the following service groups:

  • Urgent and emergency care

Overall, the service was rated as requires improvement.

The assessment took place over two days. This included a full inspection team of 3 Inspectors, an urgent and emergency care consultant and a registered nurse with urgent and emergency care experience.

Action we have taken:

We found the following breaches of regulation. The provider must:

  • Ensure care and treatment is provided in a safe way to patients (Regulation 12)
  • Establish effective systems and processes to ensure good governance in accordance with the fundamental standards of care (Regulation 17(1))

People's experience of this service

Our assessment showed a positive picture in relation to patient experience. We identified staff delivering kind and compassionate care that was largely individualised and person centred. Patients reported that staff were very caring, polite and understanding, with staff demonstrating efforts to meet the care requirements for diverse groups.

The service provided access to nutrition and hydration within the department. Patient dignity was upheld. Patients reported they had prolonged waiting times.
