Our view of the service

Blake Maternity Centre is located on the first floor of Gosport War Memorial Hospital and provides maternity services to the population of Gosport, Fareham and surrounding areas. The service operates as a midwife led unit and community maternity base and is operated by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. The Trust also operates maternity services from their main site at Queen Alexandra Hospital, and an additional midwife-led unit is located on the second floor of St Mary’s Hospital (Portsmouth Maternity Centre).

The inspection took place on the 25 March 2026 and was a planned inspection of the service. At the last inspection the service was rated as good. At this inspection the service was rated requires improvement.

We carried out a full comprehensive assessment of the service looking at all of the 5 key questions, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

We also inspected 2 other maternity services run by Portsmouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.
