Our view of the service

Portsmouth Maternity Centre is located on the second floor of St Mary’s Hospital and provides maternity services to the population of Portsmouth, Southsea, Havant and surrounding areas. The service operates as a midwife led unit and is operated by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. The Trust also operate maternity services from their main site at Queen Alexandra Hospital, and an additional midwife led unit at Gosport War Memorial Hospital (Blake Maternity Centre).

The maternity inspection took place on the 24 March 2026 and was a planned inspection of the service. At the last inspection the service was rated as good. At this inspection the service was rated requires improvement.

We carried out a full comprehensive assessment of the service looking at all of the 5 key questions, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

We also inspected 2 other maternity services run by Portsmouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.
