Our view of the service

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provide a comprehensive range of acute and specialist healthcare for approximately 800,000 people living in York, North Yorkshire, Northeast Yorkshire and Ryedale. The trust manages 2 acute hospital sites and 6 community hospitals. There is a workforce of over 10,000 staff working across the hospitals and community.

Scarborough Hospital is the second largest acute hospital site. It provides 24/7 emergency care, a broad range of acute medical and surgical services, critical care, theatre services, diagnostics, and maternity services, alongside outpatient clinics and planned care.

We conducted an on-site assessment visit for maternity on 16 and 17 April 2026 due to an aged rating. The assessment included all quality statements under the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led. Following the assessment, maternity services has an overall rating of good.
