Our view of the service

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provide a comprehensive range of acute and specialist healthcare for approximately 800,000 people living in York, North Yorkshire, Northeast Yorkshire and Ryedale. The trust manages 2 acute hospital sites and 6 community hospitals. There is a workforce of over 10,000 staff working across the hospitals and community.

The York Hospital is the largest hospital. It has over 700 beds and offers a range of inpatient and outpatient services. It provides acute medical and surgical services, including trauma and intensive care and maternity services.

We carried out an assessment of maternity at The York Hospital. The assessment commenced on 14 April 2026, with an unannounced visit by a team of inspectors and specialist advisors on 14 and 15 April 2026. The assessment included all quality statements under the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led. Following the assessment, maternity services has an overall rating of good.
