Our view of the service

Dates of inspection: 14 and 15 April 2026.

We carried out this assessment because the service had not been inspected since 2014. At that time, the outpatient department was inspected and rated in conjunction with diagnostic imaging. This was a full comprehensive inspection as the outpatient service had not been rated for this trust or as a standalone service.

In our assessment of outpatient services, we found that staff enjoyed working there and the service supported flexible working. There was a wide range of speciality appointments held at the hospital with ophthalmology and dermatology seeing the greatest number of attendances. However, we found that clinics were not utilised to their full capacity. Staff recorded patient information both on paper and electronically, however, there were multiple systems in the department which meant there was a risk of important information being missed.

People's experience of this service

Patients and those close to them were encouraged to give feedback to the service via a number of ways. Patients we spoke with were positive about their experience; some of which were regular attendees. They appreciated a service that was local to them rather than travelling to another location. The only concerns reported were the difficulties with parking, although engagement activity had taken place to address this issue.
