Our view of the service
- Whipps Cross University Hospital provides a range of general inpatient services, outpatient and day-case services, as well as maternity services and a 24-hour emergency department and urgent care centre. The hospital has various specialist services, including urology, ENT, audiology, cardiology, colorectal surgery, cancer care and acute stroke care. During this assessment we only assessed the emergency department.
- The hospital serves a diverse local population of more than 350,000 people from Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Epping Forest and further afield.
- We carried out our unannounced focused follow up on-site assessment of the emergency department on 7 May 2025. During the assessment we looked at 5 quality statements.
- The assessment team comprised of CQC inspectors, specialist advisors, CQC specialists in medicines management and mental health care. During the assessment we spoke with 9 patients and 20 members of staff at all levels and different disciplines. We observed patient care and reviewed internal documents including 17 sets of patient records. The team also reviewed policies.
- The purpose of the assessment was to follow up on the warning notice served under Section 29A of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 which was issued to the service following our assessment in July 2024.
- We found improvements had been made in the majority of areas we reviewed. However, further work is required some areas and we will expect the service to provide us with quarterly action plans to demonstrate further improvements.
