Our view of the service
HMP Erlestoke, in Wiltshire, is a category C prison for men which holds around 500 prisoners mostly serving long or indeterminate sentences.
We accompanied His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) on their independent review of progress to conduct a focused inspection of healthcare services at HMP Erlestoke. At our last joint inspection with HMIP in June 2024, we found that the quality of healthcare provided by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust (Oxleas) at this location required improvement. We issued two Requirement Notices.
The purpose of this focused inspection in April 2025 was to determine if the healthcare services provided by Oxleas were meeting their legal requirements.
During this inspection, we looked at 3 quality statements and reviewed the breaches of regulation from the last inspection. We spoke with healthcare staff, and reviewed systems and procedures. We found that sufficient improvements had been made, and Oxleas was no longer in breach of the regulation. Clinical governance had improved, operating procedures had been reviewed and changed to better meet requirements.
