Our view of the service

Date of assessment 16th March to 13th April. The service is a Domiciliary Care Agency (DCA) registered to provide personal care. People were supported with their personal care needs to enable them to live in their own homes and promote their independence. At the time of our assessment the service was supporting approximately 50 people, including providing a live in care service for some people. This means people are supported in their own homes 24 /7 with care to help enable them to remain living at home.

Leaders had embedded an effective learning culture where people could raise concerns safely in the knowledge these would be acted upon and practice improved as a result. The management team demonstrated excellent leadership skills which transferred to a happy stable work force.

Staff were recruited safely and had effective support and supervision. This created a positive staff team who had a good understanding of the provider’s values and worked hard to enable privacy, choice and independence in people’s care. Staff had access to appropriate training and demonstrated the skills and knowledge required for their roles.

The service had effective systems to share important information with the staff team and to ensure staff were supported.

The service had good systems to ensure people’s needs were assessed and their care was effectively planned. Staff demonstrated knowledge about the needs of people they supported and were familiar with signs or symptoms which might suggest a person was unwell or experiencing a deterioration in their health.

People received their medicines as prescribed by staff who were trained and assessed as competent to do so.

We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

People's experience of this service

People and their relatives knew how to raise concerns if required and commented that staff and managers were approachable and easy to engage with.

People and their relatives told us they felt staff were well trained and able to meet their needs and keep them safe.

People and their relatives told us they had been involved in the assessment process and how the person was at the centre of this process. A relative told us “I made contact. They phoned and made an appointment to meet with me and [my relative]. What I really liked was that she spoke to [relative]. We filled in lots of information, and we shared a lot of information. They took down some information about [relative’s] younger life so the carers could talk to them.”

Another relative told us, “They phone me with any concerns, They’re on it. I’ve got this open access on my phone, but I don’t keep checking it because I know they will bring to attention anything I need to know.”
