Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s needs were met through good organisation and delivery.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. People told us they liked the care staff who cared for them. Relatives said their family members were treated with consideration and had built good relationships with both care and leadership staff.

People and relatives were positive about their experiences of being supported by the service and said, “They are all very nice staff” and “They are all very caring people.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People and relatives gave positive feedback about the care provided. A person commented, “The only time I have to tell them my routine, is when they are new.” Staff told us care was focused on treating people as individuals and they knew how to support people through personalised care plans and visiting the same people regularly.

Independence, choice and control

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Care documents evidenced that staff took appropriate and swift action to respond to people’s changing needs. Staff told us the management team were contactable at all times and responded quickly if they raised concerns about people’s welfare.

Records we reviewed demonstrated that management acted quickly when staff raised concerns to them, with referrals being made to appropriate professionals at the earliest opportunity. The service had developed good links with other professionals within the community, meaning help could be sought rapidly when needed.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, was supportive and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they received the support they needed to do their job well.

We were told the Registered Manager was approachable and staff were able to share any concerns they had. Staff said they were confident the Registered Manager would act on any concerns and were invited to meetings to share concerns and best practices. This meant staff were able to celebrate success together which added to a consistent team working approach.
