People should get safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and supports their rights (outcome 4)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Experience effective, safe and appropriate care, treatment and support that meets their needs and protects their rights.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 13 November 2013, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare.

Reasons for our judgement

People told us the agency provided good quality care. A person who used the service said, “The care is excellent and the staff make me feel good at receiving it, they don’t make me feel like a burden.” A relative commented, “I have always been happy with this agency. It is professional in everything it does.”

We visited the agency’s office to look at records. Care plans were person-centred and written in conjunction with the person who used the service and/or their representative. They included a personal history to give staff an understanding of a person’s background and their likes, dislikes, and preferences. Cultural needs were met, for example if a person wanted staff of a particular gender, and/or staff who spoke a particular language, the agency supplied them.

The owners told us the agency did its best to recruit carers who had something in common with the people they were supporting. One relative confirmed this and told us, “They have gone out of their way to find a carer who has similar interests to my (family member) – that means they have a lot to talk about and get on well with each other.”

People’s care needs were continually reviewed to ensure staff were aware of any changes. One of the people who used the service told us, “I have regular reviews with the owners to make sure I am happy with the care and if anything changes they re-write the care plans and tell all the staff.” And one of the care staff said, “The agency is very proactive. Care needs can change very quickly and if they do the owners make sure care plans are updated straight away.”
