Our view of the service

We conducted an onsite unannounced assessment visit of Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital - The Chesterfield. We assessed quality statements from the safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led key questions.

We carried out this assessment due to the age of ratings of the service. At our inspection in March 2015, we inspected outpatients and diagnostic imaging as one service. Under our current methodology, outpatients and diagnostic imaging are assessed and rated as separate services. During this assessment we inspected 33 quality statements.

The outpatient service comprised of 11 consultant rooms and 3 treatment rooms. There was a physiotherapy suite and areas in which staff carried out optimisation checks and pre-assessment check for patients requiring surgery. In the 12 months before our assessment there were 39,253 outpatient appointments.

During the assessment, we spoke with staff, leaders and service users. We reviewed care records, policies, and other documentation relevant to the service.

We rated the service as good. Staff delivered compassionate, person-centred care and described a collaborative culture where they felt well supported by both colleagues and the management team. Staff understood how to report incidents and learning from these was shared across the service. They also had access to a wide range of e‑learning and were up to date with their mandatory training.

However, we found the service did not always have effective governance processes and staff did not always have the training required for their role.

The provider was in breach of 2 legal regulations as staff did not always receive appropriate training for their role and the provider did not always have effective governance processes for recruitment and training requirements.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

Feedback from people who used services was positive. Patients commented all staff were friendly and professional. People felt they were receiving considerate support from competent staff.

People told us the service was very responsive, and they didn’t have to wait long to be seen by a nurse or a clinician. Staff kept patients informed if there was any delay to their appointment times. There were signs in the waiting room for patients to contact a staff member if they had been waiting more than 15 minutes. Patients said the environment was clean and tidy.

Patient feedback on external review platforms showed high levels of satisfaction with the service. The Private Healthcare Information Network reported 97% of nearly 3,700 respondents rated their overall experience of the hospital as very good or good.
