Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Staff we spoke with demonstrated a caring, compassionate attitude towards the people they supported and the care they provided them. People and their families overall were positive about how staff supported them. One person commented, “They pull the curtains and cover me when I’m having a wash.” Another person told us, “I do have some lovely carers, and I feel safe when they are hoisting me.”

 

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People’s care records were up to date, personalised and contained detailed information about their likes and dislikes, and how they preferred staff to meet their care needs and wishes. One relative told us, “They all know [Name Name’s] mannerisms well. They’re really approachable and all have a smile on their face.”


 

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people's independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were encouraged to maintain their independence and make choices about their daily care and support. One staff told us, "I always promote them to stay as independent as they can be in all their aspects of care that is given by myself, and I always make sure they make their own decisions." A family member told us, "They support [Name] to be independent by encouraging [person] to stand up on their visits and walk using their frame." Another relative commented, "They encourage [Name] to walk to their stair lift using their frame, chattering and laughing with [person]. They promote it and make it fun."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Overall people and their families were positive about the support they received. One person told us, “They do whatever I need or ask. They stay for as long as it takes.” One family member commented, “Staff tell me if [Name] is not well” They told us this happened recently and relative was taken to hospital.

 

 

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff from induction were provided with the skills and knowledge to feel confident to provide safe and effective support. Support was provided through supervision and team meetings and staff encouraged to develop professionally.

Staff were positive about the support they received. One staff told us, “I find that if I have ever had a problem it is dealt with straight away and efficiently.” Another told us of adjustments made for them, “If I need any time off or any adjustments, I know I can go to [Name of Manager] and will do it for me.”

The provider had systems in place to recognise staff performance and build staff morale including carer of the month. One staff told us, “I won it one month. You might get some flowers and a card if a staff or client praised you.”
