Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good.This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.The service was no longer in breach of legal regulation in relation to people’s dignity and respect.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We saw staff respectfully knocking on bedroom doors before entering and taking steps to preserve people’s privacy. Staff supported people to feel cared for and comfortable by treating them with dignity, especially when providing personal care. A relative described how staff took the time to support activities for someone who was cared for in bed.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Care was personalised, and staff demonstrated knowledge of people’s preferences, histories and communication needs. Signage on people’s doors reflected their interests. Care records showed staff considered what mattered to the person, including routines and meaningful contact with family, such as supporting a person to make video calls to their family. A relative told us “[Name] likes the staff. [Name] sings to them”.

 

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported do things that mattered to them, including being able to go outside, and family were involved in supporting important moments such as birthdays. A relative told us staff offered choices and encouraged independence with personal care, saying, “The staff ask [Name] if they want a shower. They dress themselves. But staff check [Name] is dressed well”.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. The provider responded to people’s immediate needs and acted quickly when concerns were raised. A person had been unable to attend a significant family event in person. The manager had facilitated virtual attendance and offered empathetic reassurance throughout to ensure any distress was minimised.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff described feeling more supported by management and more confident to raise concerns. One told us “We are getting more training. I am happy here”.
