Our view of the service

Date of assessment – 05 August – 11 September 2026.
Castle Grange is a residential care home for older adults, some of whom may require nursing care or dementia care. The home can accommodate up to 40 people. At the time of our assessment, there were 40 people living at the home. We carried out an unannounced site visit on 5 August 2026 and a further announced visit on 7 August 2026. A review of records and information was carried out offsite.

The assessment was prompted due to an aged rating. We carried out a comprehensive assessment and reviewed 33 quality statements covering the five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The home was bright, warm and well maintained. Staff and managers were welcoming and friendly. People received person-centred care from a caring and committed staff team who understood their individual needs, preferences and wishes. Many staff had worked at the home for several years and had developed positive relationships with people. They treated people with dignity and respect and supported them to make choices about their care and daily lives. People and those important to them were involved in decisions about care and were kept informed about changes affecting them.

The provider worked effectively with healthcare professionals and external partners to ensure people received joined-up care and timely access to specialist support when needed. Staff had the skills and training required to meet people’s needs, and people were supported to maintain their health, wellbeing, independence and safety.

The management team had a clear focus on continuous improvement and had implemented a range of changes to strengthen governance, care planning, risk management and oversight processes. There was evidence of learning from incidents, safeguarding concerns and feedback, with leaders taking proactive action to improve outcomes for people. Staff described a positive and supportive culture where teamwork was valued, and they felt confident raising concerns and contributing ideas for improvement.

Feedback from healthcare partners was consistently positive. They spoke highly of the service’s collaborative approach. Managers demonstrated a strong commitment to delivering high-quality care, promoting positive experiences for people and driving ongoing improvements across the service.

Many people spoke positively about the food, activities and their living environment, and several commented on feeling settled and comfortable in the home. One person said, “I feel safe here, they look after me”, while another commented, “They are very attentive and nothing is too much trouble, the quality of care is excellent.”
Relatives were equally positive about the quality of care and support provided. They told us staff kept them informed about their family members, responded promptly to concerns and went the extra mile to support people's wellbeing. Several relatives highlighted the positive impact of the new manager, describing them as approachable, proactive and focused on making improvements. Relatives consistently said they felt their loved ones were safe and well cared for and praised the welcoming atmosphere within the home.
