Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Staff encouraged people to make their goals and aspirations known. They made every effort for people to achieve these. People and their relatives described how staff at Sway Place supported them to “make treasured memories”, examples shared with inspectors included the recreation of a relative’s wedding at the service and a birthday hot air balloon experience.

We undertook observations throughout our on-site inspection and observed staff communicated well with people, offering reassurance during times of distress.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Relatives told us, “My loved one’s personal care needs are always met and if possible by a male carer which they prefer” and, “I would comment on the friendliness and compassion of the staff when interacting with my relative.”

The provider had an Equality and Diversity policy in place. The policy detailed the providers commitment to uphold legislation and best practice to ensure people, staff and visitors were treated fairly.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People's independence was promoted, and they chose how they spent their time. During our inspection we saw people move freely throughout the service; some people choosing to have their meals in the dining room, people meeting relatives in the coffee area or at the bar.

Staff told us, “Staff always listen and address service user’s concerns, listen to their suggestions, always offer choices and care interventions are provided based on their preferences.” and, “I feel incredibly proud to be part of a home where residents are valued, respected, and empowered to live life on their own terms.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff respond to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

We undertook observations throughout the inspection and observed staff communicated well with people, offering reassurance during times of distress.

Staff told us handover meetings took place daily to ensure the staff member in charge each shift could monitor and respond to people’s needs appropriately. The manager understood their responsibilities in ensuring people’s immediate needs were responded to.
