Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 01 December to 11 December 2025. The service is a residential care home providing personal care and support to older people, some of whom have a physical disability, a sensory impairment or dementia. Cantley Grange can accommodate up to 40 people. At the time of our assessment, 37 people were living at the service. We carried out an unannounced assessment of the service due to concerns being raised to us around cleanliness, a lack of food and fluid monitoring and that there was insufficient social stimulation for people. These concerns therefore required further on-site investigation. At our last assessment, we rated the service ‘good.’ At this assessment, the rating has remained ‘good.’

We found the service was working with external professionals to maintain good infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The service now had a full domestic team in place and staff had good knowledge on effective IPC measures. We also found the facilities and equipment met the needs of people, health and safety checks and environmental risk assessments were carried out to help maintain a safe environment for people.

People were treated with kindness and compassion. The service had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns, which the registered manager investigated effectively. People were protected and kept safe from harm. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.

During the assessment, we did identify some concerns regarding the effective recording of some people’s decision making, in relation to the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). This was feedback to leaders as an area of improvement.

People had support plans and risk assessments in place which often ensured risk was managed and mitigated. However, for 1 person, we found risk relating to medicines required improvement. Medicines were generally managed well. Although, we identified areas where improvements were required to records to ensure safe consistent care was provided. We did not find these shortfalls had impacted on people's care.

People's experience of this service

During the assessment we spoke with people and their relatives. The feedback we received was mostly positive. People and relatives told us they felt safe living at the service, with 1 person commenting, “Oh yes, I feel very safe here. No issues with that.” People and relatives told us staff and leaders were responsive to issues raised. Comments included, “I’ve spoken with the [registered] manager before over the phone and know for a fact things get responded to and dealt with quickly,” and “The [registered] manager always listens to any concerns I have.”

One professional told us staff were helpful and supportive during their visits to the service and found staff to be kind and caring. Most people and relatives agreed with this telling us, “Staff are nice and friendly” and “Staff will stand and talk to me and will make sure I’m happy with [relatives] care.” However, another relative commented, “Some of the staff are really good, others don’t seem as helpful.”

People told us the quality of the food at the service was good commenting, “The food is very tasty and there’s different options if I don’t like it.”

We were informed that staff kept in contact with people’s relatives regularly and updated them promptly when changes in health or well-being occurred. Relatives told us they were offered involvement in their loved-one’s care and support planning, if the person consented. One relative told us, “Staff are informative about everything, they get the GP involved straight away if they notice [relative] is un-well.” Another relative commented, “I was involved in a best interest meeting for [relative], looking at the ReSPECT form and gathering [relatives] wishes.”

When asked about the cleanliness of the service, we were told, “It is always clean when I arrive and always see cleaning staff working. I raised an issue about cleanliness in [relatives’] room, and this was cleaned straight away.” and “I am impressed at the cleanliness; the rooms and communal areas are very well looked after.”

In terms of staffing levels, people and relatives had mixed opinions. Some comments included, “Staff are very busy when I approach them to speak about [relative]. I do worry at times [relatives] care is not always followed due to how busy they are.” and “There seems to be some agency staff who do not know my [relative] as well as other staff.” However, other people commented, “The staff have the time to be attentive to [relative], nothing’s ever too much trouble for them."
