Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity.

Staff spoke about people fondly and with kindness. Multiple staff we spoke with checked whether they could share people’s names when speaking with us. This showed they respected people’s privacy and dignity.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 2

The provider did not always treat people as individuals or make sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They did not always take account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

As detailed through the report, people were not always treated as individuals as the service had not always enabled people to explore their interests. People’s choice was sometimes limited whilst at home, for example staff had identified a person enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, however they were not given the opportunity to participate in this activity during the inspection and there were no puzzles available in the communal areas of the home. People had access to the local community and frequently attend events they enjoyed, for example a person enjoyed going swimming, they attended their local swimming baths regularly.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Some people were supported to develop their life skills, for example the service had enabled some people to seek voluntary employment and grow their own fruit and vegetables and were supported to be involved in the running of the home however this was inconsistent, people who were reliant on staff support were not given opportunities or encouraged to maintain or develop their skills, For example, their support plans had not identified their strengths or ambitions and therefore opportunities to enable people to increase their independence was limited.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider mostly listened to and understood people’s needs, Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

We observed staff responding positively to several people who were at different times in a heightened state of anxiety. It was clear staff knew people well and responded to their immediate needs with kindness and compassion. We also observed staff knowing when to give a person space to enable them to reduce their anxiety.
