Our view of the service

Figbury Lodge is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 80 older people, some of whom are living with dementia. The service had 20 transitional beds, this meant people were admitted into the service temporarily following discharge from hospital. People living on the transitional unit had access to rehabilitation services and therapists. There were 72 people living at the service at the time of inspection. The inspection was prompted by concerns about risk management and infection prevention and control within the service. We looked at 3 quality statements under the key question of safe, and this enabled us to focus on those concerns. Following the inspection, we were fully assured by the safe procedures in place. People were protected from avoidable harm as risks to their wellbeing and safety were assessed. Safeguarding procedures were robust, and staff understood how to recognise and raise concerns, they told us they were confident the registered manager would act immediately. People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment when this is in their best interests and legally authorised under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). In care homes, and some hospitals, this is usually through MCA application procedures called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA, whether appropriate legal authorisations were in place when needed to deprive a person of their liberty, and whether any conditions relating to those authorisations were being met. Infection prevention and control procedures in place meant people were protected from avoidable infections. Staff had received training in infection control and had access to personal protective equipment (PPE).

People's experience of this service

People told us they were happy living at Figbury Lodge. People were surrounded by their own belongings and their bedrooms were decorated to their taste. People were involved in managing their risks and took part in monthly reviews of their care and support. People told us staff were kind, caring and like family. We observed staff and people interacting with familiarity and affection. People were offered choices, and were supported to participate in things they enjoyed.
