Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. For example, the reception, ground floor treatment rooms and toilet were wheelchair accessible. Staff could offer visual aids for patients to review and sign documents. A hearing loop was installed, and staff could access language translation and sign language services.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care. For example, staff described making welfare phone calls to patients, including where a patient’s condition appeared to be worsening and they had missed multiple appointments.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website, patient information leaflet and social media page.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open.

At the time of our inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. Where the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, staff worked with partner organisations to support patients to access urgent care. The practice was managing access for NHS patients while awaiting the start of a new NHS dentist in the coming months.

Staff were involved in local activities which supported engagement with patients and the wider community. This included taking part in a local scarecrow trail and holding Gentle Dental open days where children, including those not registered at the practice, could attend for an examination.
