Assessing needs

Score: 3

The provider always made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by thoroughly assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. The provider used a strengths-based approach to develop assessments of people's needs. People’s care plans focused on what they were able to do, their abilities, preferences and existing support networks. Care plans for people with learning disabilities were detailed and person-centred. They focused on how people were supported to reach their agreed goals and dreams, and how access to opportunities was provided. People and their families were involved in reviewing their care needs and there was active involvement of people in development of specialised care plans to support them to take extensive overseas trips and new experiences. This approach enabled people to be in control of their care and live a life full of opportunities and experiences.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Score: 3

The provider planned and delivered people’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them. They did this in line with legislation and current evidence-based good practice and standards. The provider used evidence-based practice to ensure people’s care and support was based on the best available research evidence, professional expertise, and individual needs and preferences. The approach resulted in effective and person-centred care which improved outcomes for people and supported consistency and quality of service delivery.

How staff, teams and services work together

Score: 3

The provider worked well across teams and services to support people. They made sure people only needed to tell their story once by sharing their assessment of needs when people moved between different services. The provider had developed good working relationships with local health and care professionals which supported joined up work and improved outcomes for people. A social care professional told us, "We find Kinetic Nursing Services to be courteous, responsive, and effective in dealing with any matter and we always work together to get a solution. We may find this means liaising with the adult social care team or the continuing healthcare fast track team however we find we all work together and help each other.”

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 3

The provider supported people to manage their health and wellbeing to maximise their independence, choice and control. Members of staff supported people to live healthier lives and where possible, reduce their future needs for care and support. The provider supported a person who recognised they needed to make some changes in their diet to include more healthy options. The person wanted to lose weight and increase their mobility and ability to stand independently. The provider worked with the person and supported them to order healthy cooking food packs from an online supplier. This enabled the person to cook healthy meals which were calorie controlled. The provider agreed to fund the meals for members of staff so they were able to eat alongside the person and support the development of a ‘healthy’ mealtime experience. This approach to supporting healthier lives gave the person structure, skills development through cooking and empowered them to achieve their goal of being healthier and losing weight.

Monitoring and improving outcomes

Score: 3

The provider routinely monitored people’s care and treatment to continuously improve it. They ensured outcomes were positive and consistent and met both clinical expectations and the expectations of people themselves. A health and care professional provided feedback about how the members of staff worked with people to monitor and improve outcomes for them. A healthcare professional said, “Kinetic Nursing Services had an excellent understanding of the person’s needs and were able to contribute valuable information at visits and were responsive to attend and necessary reviews and team meetings. The person and their family spoke highly of the support provided by members of staff who were pivotal in supporting the person and their partner to remain together, and at home, for as long as they did. They said, “Kinetic Nursing Services were able to flex up support at times of emergency and went above and beyond in their support for the person in ensuring the welfare of the person’s partner as their health issues progressed. Kinetic Nursing Services placed the person’s views at the heart of their support.”

The provider told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment. People were supported to give consent about their care and support and members of staff kept people informed about care and choice options. The provider had policies and processes in place which ensured people were engaged in conversations about consent to care and support. Assessments of people’s needs were decision-specific and in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice. If people did not have capacity to make decisions, appropriate procedures were followed to ensure any decisions made were in people’s best interests.
