Safe environments

Regulations met

At the inspection on 23 April 2026,the inspection team recognised that the practice had addressed many of the concerns found during our last inspection.

The practice had obtained a medical emergency kit including an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a mercury spillage kit and a bodily fluid spillage kit. However, improvements were required to ensure Buccal Midazolam, which is a medicine used to treat seizures, was obtained as a requirement by the Resuscitation Council UK. The principal dentist assured us that new staff members would complete training in emergency resuscitation and basic life support on enrolment.

Risk assessments had been undertaken for all hazardous substances used within the practice in accordance with Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, and staff had access to the safety data sheets.

We saw servicing records for the autoclave and compressor.

The management of fire safety at the practice had improved. A fire risk assessment had been completed by a competent person on 14 April 2026. Actions identified from the assessment included the installation of emergency lighting, which had been completed. Both fire exits were now suitable to act as accessible means of escape.

Further improvements were required to ensure the appropriate placement and consistent servicing of newly installed fire alarms. Improvements were also needed to ensure all fire safety equipment was subject to regular in-house checks to confirm it remained in good working order, and that staff participated in regular fire evacuation drills and in-house fire scenario training.

NHS prescription pads were kept securely and there was a log to track their use.

The practice had ensured the facilities were maintained in accordance with regulations. There were records to demonstrate that an electrical installation condition report (EICR) had been carried out on the premises to ensure the electrical wiring was safe.

Improvements had been made on the maintenance of the practice; the flooring had been improved to reduce trip hazards.

Safe and effective staffing

Regulations met

At the inspection on 23 April 2026, the inspection team were unable to comment on safe and effective staffing arrangements, as the only member of staff present was the principal dentist. We will report further on safe and effective staffing at the follow-up inspection once the required staffing arrangements are in place.

Infection prevention and control

Regulations met

At the inspection on 23 April 2026, the inspection team recognised that the practice had addressed many of the concerns found during our last inspection.

Improvements had been made to the surfaces in surgeries and the decontamination room to ensure they were impervious and easily cleanable. Improvements had also been made to the storage of cleaning mops and buckets. However, further improvements were still required, as dirt was visible around some dental waterlines and some items stored in drawers were either undated or not contained within blister packs.

The decontamination room had an improved dirty to clean flow, hand soap and hand cream was also provided at all sinks. Further improvements were required to ensure a standard operating procedure was in place for manual cleaning.

The practice had made significant improvements to ensure effective cleaning and the safe segregation and disposal of hazardous waste. Hazardous waste was appropriately bagged and stored securely outside the practice, away from public access.

Improvements had been made with safe use of sharps. A sharps risk assessment had been carried out in March 2026. Safer sharps were now in use, sharps bins were stored appropriately and dated.

The practice had effective procedures in place to reduce the risk of Legionella, or other bacteria, developing in water systems, in line with a risk assessment and current guidance. However, improvements were required to ensure the ongoing monitoring and testing for Legionella was consistently carried out and appropriately recorded.
