Our view of the service

We carried out this announced off-site inspection on 17 April 2026.

Where we carry out an off-site assessment, we undertake a detailed review of the practice risk assessments, policies, staff records and other relevant documents. We gather feedback from patients, staff and stakeholders (where relevant). We carry out a remote visual assessment of the premises and have discussions with staff.

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.

Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

Mydentist The Old Vicarage Dental Surgery is part of Mydentist, a dental group provider. The practice is in Barnstaple in Devon and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and on-street parking was available in the local area.

The practice had 8 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 12 staff. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 1 dentist, 2 dental nurses, 1 receptionist and a covering practice manager. Three of the group’s regulatory officers were also at the inspection, supporting the practice.

People's experience of this service

The practice had systems in place to gather patient feedback.

Two weeks before our inspection, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We did not receive any direct patient feedback. On the day of our inspection, we reviewed patient feedback collected by the practice, as well as online feedback. Overall, this feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and the care provided by the practice.

Where patients raised concerns or made suggestions, we were told this was reviewed and that appropriate action would be taken where appropriate.

We saw feedback scores from March 2026. Of the 58 patients who responded, 47 were either extremely likely or likely to recommend the practice to family and friends. In addition, 9 were undecided whether they would recommend the practice.

Patients praised the practice for appointment access and efficiency, saying, “Quick, efficient, useful advice,” and “Got in straight away no ifs and buts so I rate them excellent service.”

Those who felt anxious reported being well supported, with comments like, “The hygienist I had on Thursday was fantastic, so friendly and professional. She put me at ease as soon as I walked in.”

Access and communication were also highlighted: “Offer NHS subsidised checkups,” and “Good reminders for visit. Friendly.”

The practice shared patient feedback with the team.
