Our view of the service
We inspected the service on 30 July and 20 August 2025. This was a responsive inspection due to concerns the Care Quality Commission received from visitors to the service and anonymous whislteblowers. The service is a care home with nursing providing care for older and younger people living with dementia and physical disabilities. Wayside Care Home provides care and support for up to 31 people. There was 26 people using the service during our inspection.
At this inspection we found the provider was in breach of 4 legal regulations in relation to fit and proper person, safe care and treatment, good governance and submitting statutory notifications.
We carried out a tour of the building and found people were not protected from the risk of waterborne infections, risks of scalds and burns, risk of fire and risk of electrocution. The home was not well maintained, and many areas required urgent repairs. Following the first day of our inspection the provider addressed most of the issues by the second day of our visit.
There was not enough staff with the right skill mix to ensure people’s safety at night.
Governance and management systems were ineffective, resulting in poor oversight of health and safety, with numerous unaddressed actions. We were not always informed about notifiable incidents happening at the service.
We found the Nominated Individual not always being open and honest with Care Quality Commission during this inspection. There was no registered manager in post during our inspection. There was an acting manager who was in process of registering with the Commission.
Medicines were managed safely. People received their medicines as prescribed.
After the first day of our inspection we requested immediate action plan to address the most significant concerns by the provider. Although most of the actions have been addressed by the second day of our visit, further improvements were needed to ensure the improvements were sustainable. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.
People's experience of this service
While people we spoke with and their relatives expressed general satisfaction with the care provided, our inspection found people’s care did not meet the expected standards. People did not always live in a safe and well-maintained environment. There were no proper processes in place to ensure health and safety standards were maintained at the service.
