Governance, management and sustainability
At the inspection on 27 January 2026 we found the practice had made the following improvements to comply with the regulation:
Improvements had been made to the system for oversight of the infection control process. Staff described and demonstrated the tests they carried out to ensure equipment used in the decontamination and sterilisation of used dental instruments was in working order. This was in line with national guidance.
Improvements had been made to the system for managing the risks associated with fire. Staff described and demonstrated the tests and checks they carried out to ensure fire related equipment was present, operational and in good working order.
Improvements had been made to the system for managing the risks associated with Legionella. Staff described the checks and procedures they carried out to reduce the chance of Legionella developing in dental unit water lines. These included the use of a water conditioning solution, flushing dental unit water lines and infrequently used outlets and monitoring the water temperature at certain taps. However, we noted the taps used to record the water temperatures were not always the designated sentinel outlets as defined in the risk assessment. We discussed this with staff and were assured it would be addressed and rectified.
Improvements had been made to the recruitment process, in particular, the process for obtaining Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. We were told that all staff were enrolled on the DBS update service and the provider checked the staff members record annually. We were shown records relating to a new member of staff where a new DBS check had not been obtained. Staff told us the rationale for not doing so. However, this had not been formally documented in a risk assessment.
Staff described the systems and processes for quality assurance and continuous improvement. This included undertaking audits according to recognised guidance. They supported staff to provide care and treatment to patients in line with national guidance.
