Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 7 April to 16 May 2025. Marine View Lodge nursing home provides support to a maximum of 80 people living with dementia and/or nursing needs. At the time of our assessment, 60 people were living at the home. We visited the service in response to information of concern we received. Concerns related to the leadership governance and culture at the home. During the assessment, we identified 2 breaches of the regulations; Regulation 12 medicine management (a repeated breach) and Regulation 17 Well led (a repeated breach). Sufficient improvements in these areas had not been achieved.
We expect health and social care providers to guarantee people with a learning disability the choices, dignity, independence and good access to local communities most people take for granted. Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture is the statutory guidance which supports CQC to make assessments and judgements about services providing support to people with a learning disability or autistic people. The provider was able to demonstrate how they were meeting the underpinning principles of 'Right support, right care, right culture'.
We identified 2 breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. These were repeated breaches from our last inspection.
Staff were committed to providing positive care, and many examples were seen where staff had demonstrated positive and respectful interactions with people they supported. For those who wished to participate in outdoor activities, this was done with people wearing hats and sun cream to protect themselves from the hot weather prevalent at the time. Staff encouraged them to join in as much as possible.
The registered manager assisted with the assessment and made documents available to us during this assessment.
People's experience of this service
Some people we spoke to provided limited accounts of the care they received. Some people told us that they were “bored,” and another said, “I don't see the staff.” Another person reached out to us to say that they needed help. However, a member of staff was in the vicinity and was responding to the person’s needs and supported them in a respectful and friendly manner. Some people told us that they were not always happy with the meals provided.
Relatives were positive about the care their loved ones received. Comments included, “All staff are caring, friendly, helpful and kind,” “I would recommend 100%”, “People are well cared for” and “It is well managed”.Observations of lunch noted that people weresupported in a very caring, patient, and compassionate manner. There was a significant delay in supporting one person at lunch as initially they sat near to the dining table and then was transferred back to an armchair. It was unclear what the reason for this was.
People who had specific requests about their care and support had their views listened to. These related to requirements in staff practice and ensuring a low stimulus environment in their bedroom.
