Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People were treated with dignity and respect. Staff had a person-centred approach where they had a positive rapport and relationship with people. Staff worked professionally and people felt comfortable receiving support. One person told us, “The staff are all really kind here. I never wanted to come into a home but I am glad I came here.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Staff had a person-centred approach. Staff understood the importance of treating people as individuals and understanding people’s specific needs and requirements. For example, staff adjusted their approach to care for people who were unable to verbally communicate to ensure people were not discriminated against. We completed a structured observation for a person who was unable to speak verbally. We observed the person consistently smiled and moved their body positively to staff when staff spoke with them and included the person in activities.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to live independent lives. Staff knew people well and their preferences, wishes and goals. Staff understood the importance of making sure people lived independent lives without barriers. There was a wing of the home which supported people living with dementia. It was designed and decorated to reduce anxiety and stress. Staff ensured people were supported to live fulfilling lives and ensured people’s dementia diagnosis did not limit their ability to engage in meaningful choice and control over their lives. One member of staff told us, “It is lovely to work here and make a real difference to people. I feel like I make a real difference.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People received support in a timely way. People had access to call bells and for those who were unable to use a call bell, alternatives were put in place to alert staff if the person needed support. People told us they did not have to wait a long time for staff to give them the support they needed. One person told us, “I never have to wait long. If I use my buzzer, they come really quick every time. The staff work really hard.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The provider had a positive approach to workforce wellbeing. Staff told us the service was a good place to work and staff felt supported as an employee. The staff team worked together well and ensured people’s care needs were always met.
