Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

The service was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity. Staff always treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Appointments for every patient were a minimum of 15 minutes, as standard. This enabled clinicians to give more time to holistic care and treatment. We observed staff talking kindly to patients, and about patients, during our assessment. Friends and Family Test results showed that 98% of respondents (from 699 responses) since January 2026 rated the practice as good or very good.

The service had arrangements to promote people’s privacy. The service performed better than the national average in the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey. This showed people felt listened to and felt they were treated with kindness. For example, 92%said the healthcare professional they saw or spoke to was good at listening to them during their last general practice appointment compared to a national average of 87%.

The percentage of respondents to the survey who felt the healthcare professional at their last appointment was good at treating them with care and concern was 88%, compared to a national average of 86%. This was mirrored in feedback from people we received during our assessment who described staff as; caring, friendly, polite, professional. People commented that they did not feel rushed by clinicians.

Compared with a national average of 92%, 99% of Esk Valley Medical Practice patients felt that the healthcare professional they saw had all the information they needed about them during their last appointment.

The practice held a register of 134 patients who required reasonable adjustments and met their needs accordingly. For example, some patients preferred to be seen the same day without the need for care navigation, whereas this didn’t necessarily suit other patients due to work commitments. The practice described how they met the needs of all patients by using a ‘patient first’ approach which allowed the patient to articulate the most helpful way to access their care and treatment.
