Our view of the service

We carried out a comprehensive assessment from 9 to 17 December 2025 because the service had not been quality rated for over 5 years. Avon Road Surgery is a GP practice and delivers practice to approximately 5897 patients under a contract held with NHS England. The National General Practice profiles states that Information published by Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows that deprivation within the practice population group is 10 deciles. The lower the decile out of 10, the more deprived the practice population is relative to others. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the practice, the context the practice was working within and how this impacted practice delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

SAFE:

Staff felt safe to raise concerns. Incidents were investigated, and people were protected through effective risk management. Facilities and equipment were clean, well-maintained, and met practice needs. Managers ensured staff received regular training and appraisals to support high-quality care. Staff managed medicines safely.

EFFECTIVE:

Staff ensured care and treatment was evidence-based and aligned with best practice. They worked collaboratively across agencies to support positive outcomes and smooth transitions of patients between services. Staff ensured people understood their care and treatment, enabling informed consent.

CARING:

Peoples feedback demonstrated they were treated with respect. Staff supported individual preferences and helped people have a choice in their care. Privacy was protected, and staff wellbeing was actively supported.

RESPONSIVE

The practice had ensured people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs. The practice had developed appropriate, accurate and up-to-date information to ensure patient access and that their specific needs were met. People were given support to plan for important life changes, so they could make informed decisions about their future, including at the end of their life.

WELL-LED:

Leadership was visible, knowledgeable, and supportive. Staff felt safe to give feedback. Roles and responsibilities were well understood. Managers engaged with the local community to improve care and welcomed innovation. Leaders used reliable data on risk, performance, and outcomes. Governance processes were mostly well-established, with accessible policies and procedures. The leaders demonstrated they had a commitment to improvement and innovation.

People's experience of this service

Peoples feedback was mostly positive about the quality of their care and treatment. Recent the National GP Patient Survey results showed people were satisfied with practices provided and the practices responses were above or slightly below the local and national averages for all areas of care, treatment and access; 88% stated their needs were met and 78% stated they had a very or fairly good overall experience. In addition, CQC received positive comments about the practice. We spoke with the participation group (PPG) who represented the views of people using the practice, who told us anything raised by the group was followed up by the staff. The practice provided support to four residential/nursing homes, feedback by the homes was positive about the service the practice provided.
