Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 24 February to 9 March 2026.

The Avenues Medical Centre is a GP practice in Hull and delivers services to approximately just over 7,000 patients under a contract held with NHS England. The National General Practice Profiles states that the ethnic make-up of the practice area was 90.5% white, 3.87% Asian, 1.54% black, 2.06% mixed and 2.03% other ethnicities. Information published by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows that deprivation within the practice population group is in the 5th decile (5 of 10). The lower the decile, the more deprived the practice population is relative to others.

We carried out an assessment and rated this practice under our previous methodology in June 2016. The practice was rated Good overall and for all key questions. This assessment was carried out due to the length of time since our previous assessment. At this assessment the practice has been rated good overall and for the key questions effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Safe has been rated as requires improvement.

This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

We found breaches of regulation in relation to Regulation 12 – safe care and treatment. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to these concerns.

People's experience of this service

People were positive about the quality of their care and treatment. Recent survey results, including from the National GP Patient Survey and the NHS Friends and Family Test, showed people were satisfied with services. Feedback received by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) was mainly positive. There was praise for staff members attitude and helpfulness. Multiple patients told us they had been a patient at the practice since birth and would not want to register anywhere else. Of the negative feedback received, the majority of these involved difficulties in accessing services, however we received substantially more positive than negative comments about the availability of appointments. The practice did not have an active patient participation group (PPG), efforts were being made to reestablish this in order to ensure the views of people using the service were heard and listened to.
